Six Modern Ladies

This painting was originally painted in 1992 while I was an art major at Baylor University. The inspiration for this painting came from drawings I did during figure drawing classes during undergrad. I love the human figure and love studying how light and shadow play on each surface. It is my interpretation of modern cubism that highlights the beauty of all bodies.

My color palette in the early ’90s was browns, creams, yellows, etc… For 18 years it has gone with me wherever we have moved. During quarantine in March of 2020, I decided to “modernize” my ladies so that I could hang this painting in our new more modern house with a cool color palette. So, I repainted it using grays, blues, and blacks and I love it. The process was almost like a rebirth of sorts and after it was complete it inspired me to paint even more. I plan to do more paintings similar to this in the future!
